Solar Water Heaters for Haeju School

Purpose

To install a bank of renewable energy (solar voltaic) water heaters on the roof of the Haeju Orphans (Junior) School and to provide a year's supply of handwashing soap and instructional materials for the children about the importance of handwashing for disease prevention.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Haeju Orphans (Junior) School is located in Paegok-dong, Haeju City, South Hwanghae Province.
It has 523 pupils (335 schoolboys and 188 schoolgirls) and 64 staff members. 

Currently, water for cooking, cleaning and bathing is heated using coal which is not only expensive but also pollutes the environment.
 

Project scope

We will purchase and install 24 solar energy water heaters and supporting equipment and we will provide a year’s supply of toilet soap. 
The solar technology will be purchased from a local manufacturer in Pyongyang that will send staff for installation and setup and provide after sales technical service and support.
Toilet soap will be purchased from a local factory run by disabled people.  

We will also produce pamphlets on personal hygiene for the staff at the orphanage to teach children about the importance of handwashing to prevent disease.

  • DPRK Committee for the Promotion of International Trade - in country purchase, project management and monitoring. 
  • Kwangbok Solar  – in-country supplier and installer of the renewable energy solutions
  • Participating Rotary Clubs - fundraising and in-country follow-up

BENEFICIARIES

Mirim School students and staff: 550 orphans ranging from age 7 to 16 as well as 150 members of staff. Total 700 persons.

IMPACT

Haeju Orphans (Junior) School students and staff: 523 pupils (335 schoolboys and 188 schoolgirls) and 64 staff members. 

Budget

Total projected cash budget including 10% allowance for contingency is USD $19,585. In kind contribution from local partners is projected to be valued at $7,172 for a total project budget of $26,757.

Timeline

This project will commence once funding is secured and will require 2 months to arrange purchase, manufacture and installation with a follow up visit planned 2 months after completion.
